Lot Essay

This endangered species strap is shown for display purposes only and is not for sale. The watch will be supplied with a calf leather strap.

The “Diabolo” model was launched in 1991, featuring the celebrated “attaches à vis armurier” or “gunsmith” style tube screws to fasten the lugs, with cabochon decoration to the ends as used in Cartier’s early 20th century designs. The name is derived from the conical shape of the large winding crown, resembling a “diabolo” or “Japanese devil”, a toy popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Diabolo tourbillon is furthermore Cartier’s first tourbillon wristwatch ever produced.

The present watch is from a special series of the model in platinum launched in 1997 to celebrate the firm’s 150th anniversary.

According to the copy of the insurance confirmation from Cartier Munich dated 19 March 1998 the retail price for the Diabolo Tourbillon at the time was DM192,000, around CHF100,000.

The particularity of the tourbillon is that all the escapement parts - pallets wheel, pallets and sprung balance - are assembled in a small mobile cage that makes one complete rotation in one minute. This ingenious device, invented by the celebrated Abraham-Louis Breguet, eliminates performance variations due to gravitational forces and thus assures optimum accuracy in the mechanical watch.
