A FRENCH GOLD MOUNTED AND ENAMEL SNUFF BOX
THE ENAMELS, CIRCA 1640; THE MOUNT, CIRCA 1730
The box is of oval form. The cover is mounted with an enamelled Blois school watchcase depicting a classical scene of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus. The watch case is chased around with a flying bird and a hunting dog within a garden. The interior is an enamel painting of three Saints standing in a riverscape.
3 1/8 in. (8.1 cm.) long
Watchcases from the Blois factories were used by English and French goldsmiths when the watches that they contained came to the end of their working lives.
