Lot Essay

This calligraphic bag records Mustafa Ghaleb Effendi as the son of the Al-Hajj Salih Effendi, the illuminator and binder of the previous lot who was also active in the kitabkhaneh in Medina. It notes Al-Hajj Salih as the chief binder within the Shaykh al-Islam ‘Arif Hikmet Bey library in Medina. The ‘Arif Hikmet Bey library still stands today and its collection remains one of the most important of works in Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
