Lot Essay
The PETAG workshop frequently used 16th and 17th century classical carpets as a source for their designs, such as the present directional lozenge 'vase' pattern, an example of which can be seen on a carpet formerly in the Baltimore Museum of Art and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (M. S. Dimand. & J.Mailey, Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973, fig.103). This particular overall repeat pattern was highly adaptable when weaving carpets of varying proportions as seen in two examples sold at Christie's, London 1 May 2003, lot 48 and Christie's, New York, 12 December 2006, lot 123. For a fuller discussion on the PETAG workshop, see the previous lot in this sale.
