Lot Essay

The knot count measures approximately 9V x 9H per cm. sq.

The term souf refers to the technique which involves the design being piled as in a normal carpet but where the ground remains flatwoven, leaving the design in physical relief. The main structure of souf Kashan carpets has a central cotton core but is woven so that the areas of flatwoven ground are covered by the secondary silk wefts which give the field its colour. When a souf carpet becomes worn, the cotton structure begins to show through the coloured silk, which is not the case in the present rug which retains its striking peacock-blue coloured field and border.
