Lot Essay

Luiz Ferreira (1909-1994) was one of the most influential Portuguese silversmiths of the second half of the 20th century working in Porto. Born into a family of silversmiths he upheld the tradition of a classical aesthetic before developing his own style inspired by nature. Animals, often set with semi-precious stones or other media, became his trademark. Numerous models were created in varying sizes, the swan becoming his most famous. After his death in 1994, his sons perpetuated their father's tradition and style.
