JAN VAN GOYEN, FIGURES ALONG THE COASTLINE, A CHURCH TOWER ON THE BACKGROUND, BLACK CHALK, GREY WASH, MONOGRAMED AND DATED

Throughout his productive career, Van Goyen drew lively beach scenes with fishermen and women engaged in conversation in the foreground against a seaside backdrop. The present drawing is a characteristic example of such works and is closely comparable to a sheet showing a similar composition in reverse in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (inv. PD 374-1964; see H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, 1596-1656. Ein Œuvreverzeichnis. Katalog der Handzeichnungen, I, Amsterdam, 1972, no. 131, ill.).

Tout au long de sa carrière, Van Goyen a dessiné des scènes de plage animées avec des pêcheurs et des femmes engagées dans une conversation au premier plan sur fond de mer. Le présent dessin est un exemple caractéristique de ce type d'oeuvres et est étroitement comparable à une feuille montrant une composition similaire inversée au Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (inv. PD 374-1964 ; voir H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, 1596-1656. Ein OEuvreverzeichnis. Katalog der Handzeichnungen, I, Amsterdam, 1972, n° 131, ill.).
