RODERICUS ZAMORENSIS (1404-1470). Speculum vitae humanae. Rome: Joannes Philippus de Lignamine, 31 July 1473.
Early edition of the Speculum of Rodrigo Sanchez de Arévala, bishop of Zamora. This autobiographical moral treatise outlines the benefits and obligations of the various secular and religious trades and professions of man, including medicine, husbandry, mechanics, mercantile trade, mathematics, and astronomy. It was first printed at Rome in 1468 by Sweynheym and Pannartz and proved immensely popular—at least 20 editions, including translations, were printed just in the 15th century. Chancery folio (255 x 168mm). 164 leaves, including the 4 leaves of tabula not reported in GW. Initials in brown (ink burn from iron gall ink, some headlines shaved, dampstaining, worming in text, old paper repair on initial blank). Modern red morocco (gently scuffed). Provenance: some marginalia – remains of two illegible stamps – acquired from Bernard M. Rosenthal, Inc, New York, 1 November 1964.
