Domaine Armand Rousseau was founded at the beginning of the 20th Century by Armand Rousseau. Through marriage, he acquired several plots of vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits. Gradually he increased the size of the Domaine with acquisitions of vineyards in Charmes Chambertin in 1919, Clos de la Roche and Chambertin in 1920 and 1921, Mazy-Chambertin in 1937, Mazoyeres-Chambertin in 1940 and the esteemed Premier Cru Clos Saint Jacques in 1954. In 1959 Armand was killed in a car accident and succeeded by his son Charles. Charles’s son Eric Rousseau assumed control in the 1990’s helped today by his daughter Cyrielle. Domaine Armand Rousseau are world-renowned for their top three wines Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques, but also produce a plethora of other outstanding wines such as Clos de la Roche, Clos des Ruchottes, Cazetiers and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques and more. The Domaine owns more than 15 hectares of vineyards. Domaine Armand Rousseau is the largest landowner in Chambertin. Vinification is traditionally Burgundian and the focus is on old vines and low yields to produce wines with concentration and finesse. The majority of the grapes are destemmed and then cooled prior to fermentation in stainless steel. The wines are aged in barrel with typically the same percentage of new oak followed each year, except the Clos-St-Jacques which may vary. For Chambertin and Clos de Bèze 100 per cent new oak is used and 100 per cent one-year-old wood for other grands crus, although little new oak is now used for Clos des Ruchottes. The wines are the embodiment of elegant and delicate Pinot Noir and age fantastically well and develop multi-layered complexity with bottle evolution. One of the most memorable wines of my life was a bottle of 1990 Clos-St-Jacques from Domaine Armand Rousseau which was incredible – extraordinarily complex with depth and concentrated flavours yet with a finesse and elegance that made each sip a magical experience. I concur with Neal Martin, who stated that “some of the greatest wines I have ever tasted have borne Rousseau's name, in particular outstanding Chambertin and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques, the premier cru that merits promotion to Grand Cru more than any other. I also adore the Chambertin Clos de Bèze; the 1989 leaving a room full of tasters grasping for superlatives when tasted in 2003”. - Tim Triptree MW
