Faute de pouvoir trancher in dubio abstinemus.
And what about the identity of this mysterious sculpture, once in the renowned collection of Bela Hein before it was acquired by Michel Périnet? Its features remind those of certain Djenne terracottas from Mali, but also those of certain bronze figures of the Kulango people from the Ivory Coast. While such an attribution is not free of contradiction, could we assume at least the African origin of such puzzling work? We could indeed, but with no higher degree of certainty: the work seems equally reminiscent of certain prehistoric stone carvings from Papua New Guinea. Not to speak of those of Saharan prehistory…In lack of any decisive argument in favor of one or the other attribution in dubio abstinemus.
