Lot Essay

"I think I played some of my best tennis these last two weeks, especially against Murray. The win was exceptional and the performance from my side. As you grow older you enjoy the victories even more.” (Roger Federer, The Guardian, 2010)

Following his Wimbledon triumph of the previous year, Roger was clearly hungry for more Grand Slams. He had come close to adding to his tally at the 2009 U.S. Open but was edged out in a thrilling final set by Juan Martin del Potro. The next major came at the 2010 Australian Open. Nadal was again forced to withdraw from a Grand Slam due to a knee injury, retiring during his quarter-final match against Andy Murray. The Briton would go onto defeat Marin Cilic in his semi-final.

On the opposite side of the draw to Murray, Roger advanced to the final by gaining revenge on Nikolay Davydenko for his victory in the previous year’s ATP Finals. He then went on to defeat Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the semi-finals. In a repeat of the 2008 U.S. Open Final, Roger, wearing sneakers with Swiss flags showing the years of his previous three Australian Open victories, would make it a quartet, overcoming Andy Murray in straight sets.

In March, Roger succumbed to a bout of pneumonia which affected his performance during the clay and grass court seasons. The French Open would be the first time in over six years that Roger hadn’t made at least the semi-final of a Grand Slam, widely considered to be one of his most impressive statistics. Defeats in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the semi-final of the U.S. Open would follow, before Roger signalled a return to his imperious best to lift the end of season ATP Finals trophy for the fifth time.
