As the 2018 season dawned, many questioned whether Roger’s incredible form would continue. Could he possibly win a 20th Grand Slam title? His performances in Melbourne quickly settled any doubts as he raced into the quarter-finals where he again defeated Tomas Berdych, before Korea’s Chung Hyeon withdrew midway through their semi-final.

For a second successive season Federer faced Čilić in a Grand Slam final. However, unlike at Wimbledon in 2017, this year the Croatian was unhampered by a foot injury and was in dangerous form. In a similar story to the Australian Open final against Nadal in 2017, Roger twice went ahead before being pegged back. Ultimately, experience told in the fifth set decider with Roger winning it 6-1.

Roger’s insatiable appetite for Grand Slam success, fitness and remarkable longevity in the game saw him become the first man to win 20 Grand Slam titles and join tennis greats including Serena Williams and Steffi Graff as one of only a handful of players to achieve the milestone.
