Extraordinarily scarce and very significant professional model bat as used by the "Flying Dutchman" Honus Wagner. Louisville Slugger model 40K "Kork Grip" handle bat measures 32 ¾" long and weighs 43.7oz. These specifications are consistent with other Wagner professional model bats including a specific example measuring 33" long and weighing 42 ounces with direct provenance from Wagner himself in 1948 (noted in PSA letter). The bat is of a Northern White Ash with notably wide grain format definitively of a professional use manufacture quality. Bat presents with excellent use including numerous ball marks to both the right and left barrel areas in addition to cleat marks. The bat handle remains uncracked with a tightly spiraled period black handle tape in place. The Kork Grip model 40K bat was documented to have been used by a number of Major League players including Ty Cobb, Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth, and Wagner including photographic documentation of same. It can also be documented though comparison of period images that Wagner employed the use of a similar black handle tape (along with many other payers of the era) on a portion of his game bats. Honus Wagner's legacy within the history of the game is equal in both accomplishment and lore. He was one of the first true superstars within American sports and his now famed disdain of tobacco use by young boys led to the most valuable baseball trading card within the hobby. Notably Honus Wagner was the first signature endorsee by contract with Louisville Slugger in 1905. However, the majority of Wagner's career predominantly encompassed a period within which professional model player bats were largely unmarked or display a block letter name endorsement. As such, the population of facsimile signature stamped Wagner game bats numbers in the single digits including the offered specimen.
