Lot Essay
Niche design Mudjur carpets were highly popular during the 19th century and were widely exported. The kaleidoscopic palette of the present lot is a classic example with a widely conceived deep ruby-red mihrab. The decorative water ewers on either side of the stepped arch are a charming feature and appear on a similar example in the Textile Museum Washington, (Richard Ettinghausen, Prayer Rugs, exhibition catalogue, Washington D.C, 1974, pp.66-7, pl.XVIII).
