Lot Essay

Sir George Chalmers signed his paintings 'Equs Barons', and claimed to have inherited the baronetcy of Chalmers of Cults, but his rights to these titles have been doubted. He exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy from 1776 to 1790. The letters 'H' and 'N' inscribed on the spinning top here may be the sitter's initials.
