Lot Essay


In relief on the central medallion is Scylla, the terrifying sea-monster who dwelled in a cave opposite the whirlpool Charybdis, thought to be at the Straight of Messina (Odysseus’ encounter with her is described in Book XII of Homer’s Odyssey).
