Lot Essay

John Piper's landscape paintings from the late 1950s are often highly structured, with abstracted motifs arranged within and across a 'rectilinear' armature of horizontal and vertical lines. Many of Piper's earliest designs for stained glass windows, including the great Baptistery Window in Coventry Cathedral (which were being made at the same time as the present lot), rely on a similar device for their character and impact.

We are very grateful to Rev. Dr Stephen Laird FSA for preparing this catalogue entry.
