Figures on the Shore is thought to have been painted during Peploe's visit to the Isle of Barra in 1903. The work belonged to the artist's eldest son, Willy, and it remained in the family until 2004. It was sold by a member of the family who was married to the Italian film producer, Bernardo Bertolucci, and it was joked that the sale proceeds from this particular work were used to finance one of his movies.
