Barbeito, Madeira Malvazia 1875
Madeira
Damaged wax capsule. Stencilled bottle. Level: into-neck
Bought in 1946-1948 during the foundation of the company. Aged in cask until 2008, then transferred to demi john. Tasting note: First tasted at the Majestic Malvasia Tasting in April 2015. Reductive nose, cheesy, concentration from extended cask aging. Minty, direct, dairy. Really requiring air to open and show its full potential.
Rich sweet start of taste, nice finish, fresh acidity, on the finish better then at first taste. love the lingering sweet soft passion fruits well balanced with fine soft acidity. Good. But not in the class of the 1882/1880. Ricardo says that it’s to concentrated and should have been moved to glass earlier. He thinks that the 1875 Malvasia from Oliviera’s and Barbeito came from the same source.
A demi-john sample tasted in July 2020 with at Barbeito.
Dark chocolate, old oak and spices on the first nose. Very concentrated appearance. This was aged in the old warehouse in Funchal, next to Reid’s, where Avista Restaurant is now. A warm storage.
Intense flavors on the palette, big bold and so concentrated. Yet all in rich fruit, packed in. On the finish the grip of extracts is even clearer. I love this. Strong appearance. This is great wine.
Impressive freshness on the after taste. Last tasted July 2020. Edwin Vos
