La présente composition, d'un artiste non identifié, est pensée d’après l’œuvre de Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), peintre académique qui a traité le thème des « Amateurs de peinture » à diverses reprises. Le musée d’Orsay en possède une version de l’artiste peinte en 1860 (inv. no. RF1855). Une autre, plus proche de notre tableau, fut vendue chez Christie’s à Paris le 3 décembre 2003, lot 719, lors de la vente de l'ancienne collection du baron Hottinguer.
The present composition by an unidentified artist is thought to be a work after a painting by Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), an academic painter who frequently depicted the theme “Amateurs de peinture.” The Musée d’Orsay has a version of this work from 1860 (inv. no. RF1855) in its collection. Another version, more similar to the current work, was sold at Christie’s Paris on 3 December 2003, lot 719 during the sale of baron Hottinguer's collection.
