A VERY RARE LONGQUAN CELADON ‘PHOENIX’ VASE
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY (960-1127)
The ribbed neck is flanked by a pair of moulded phoenixes above the baluster body, carved in relief with four registers of overlapping lotus petals. The lotus petals are detailed with finely incised lines denoting the veining of the leaves. It is covered overall with a pale green glaze with a slight yellow tint.

Compare to a Northern Song dynasty Yue celadon vase with dish-shaped mouth and bow-string bands on the neck, exhibited in Mostra D’Arte Cinese/ Exhibition of Chinese Art, Venice, 1954, cat.no.398. See also a Northern Song dynasty Ding vase, illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu, vol.2, Tokyo, 1977, p. 161.

Compare with a similar Longquan vase with a plain neck in the Longquan Museum, Zhejiang Province.
