General Sir Walter N. Congreve V.C.

Among the first soldiers to enter Pretoria were Winston Churchill and his cousin, the young Duke of Marlborough. Close upon their heels, at the head of Lord Robert's advancing army, was the 18th Infantry Brigade. The Brigade-Major was Walter N. Congreve V.C. Congreve and according to family tradition, he met up with Churchill that day, and Churchill showed his friend the newsapaper he had picked up as a souvenir. Congreve asked if he could borrow it to read that evening. Later in the day, Congreve's brigade was ordered to move out of Pretoria. In the event, Congreve did not see Churchill again, who returned to England to stand for parliament. Congreve was appointed personal and acting military secretary to Lord Kitchener on his succession to Commander-in-Chief in South Africa. The newspaper remained in the Congreve archives until given to the vendor by Major Christopher Congreve, Walter's youngest son, in the late 1970's.
