HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)
Two autograph letters, signed (with the right hand): "Horatio Nelson," to Lieutenant St. Hill, from: "Agamemnon, off Calvi," 5 and 13 August 1794, the first of 2-pages, instructing him to inform him in the course of the day: "how many people each ship of your division can carry without inconvenience for a very short voyage, also if you have water and provisions for the number of people your ships can carry," and wanting numbers of men on shore and of ships in case Agamemnon does not return before the transports are needed (slightly discoloured); the second of 2-pages, requiring him to order the Scarborough if she has the powder from Port Agra, to join Lord Booth in Fiorenza Bay, and saying that St. Hill had better come to Calvi harbour, and the Chargeable, if not wanted by the Commissary, is to come too, instructing him in a postscript to bring the spars from the tent (seal tear). Lot Essay
Calvi, the Corsican port nearest to France, was besieged by a landing party of 200 seamen under Nelson's command. It finally capitulated on August 10.
