Lot Essay

Being an exhibition piece, the present work is larger than many of Brown's work from the period and is probably the painting described by the Art Journal as a scene of a little girl in sunlight that "bathes part of her exquisitely modeled form in a halo of glory." ("Art in Chicago," Art Journal, vol. 2, January 1869, p. 44)
