But memories sweet will linger here.
The inner foot rim is then further engraved with the names of the 86 individuals who presented this bowl to Anthony Hinkle on the occasion of his 60th birthday in 1902. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1842, Hinkle was described in his obituary in the Cincinnati Enquirer as, "for at least a quarter of a century... the most liberal and active patron of music in this city." Hinkle's father, Anthony H. Hinkle Sr., was one of the founders of the school book publishing house W. B. Smith & Co., subsequently Sargent, Wilson, & Hinkle, and later the American Book Company, where Hinkle began his career learning the trade of book binding before becoming managing director. In Cincinnati society, Hinkle was known for throwing elaborate charity balls with his wife, Katherine Davis, as well as being an important promotor of the Philharmonic Orchestra, President of the Music Hall Trustees, President of the first musical festival, and trustee of the local College of Music.
An identical example of this punch bowl by Whiting Mfg. Co. was sold at Christie's, New York, 19 January 2018, lot 235.
