Lot Essay

The sitters in this portrait are most likely Maria, the first wife of William Beverley Bird (1818-1892) of "Cypress Hall" in King and Queen County, Virginia and their daughter, Martha Fauntleroy (Bird) Taylor (1857-1935). Her parentage unknown, Maria's maiden name may have been Abrams. She married Bird in 1843 and died around the time this portrait was painted.
