Lot Essay

George Washington Lafayette Fox was an actor and pantomimist known for his clown roles, particularly the character of Humpty Dumpty. He often wore a fox medallion on the chest of his costumes as seen in the present lot. For further information and a similar example see Ralph Sessions, The Shipcarvers Art: Figureheads and Cigar-Store Indians in Nineteenth-Century America (Princeton, 2005), pp. 168-171.
