Lot Essay

This bottle is particularly unusual in the manner in which the carver has continued the dense decorative scheme onto the top of the mouth and the base. The subject matter of five (wu) bats (fu) can be read as wufu, meaning a wish for five blessings. For a further discussion on this topic, see T. Bartholomew, Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 2006, p. 23.
