Lot Essay

A considerable rarity, only a handful of the two-tone steel and gold reference 25654SA have appeared at auction, in fact it is the rarest version of the model with only 72 examples made out of the edition of 800 watches. The present C-series example with beautiful Mark 1 white dial without leap-year indication has a smooth finish and a lunar calendar on the edge of the moon phase aperture.

Two-tone wristwatches became hugely popular in the 1980s, one of the symbols of success that defined the era. Retailing on average at around double the price of a steel watch, the steel and gold versions of the Royal Oak were introduced in response to this fashion for mixed metal wristwatches. The undeniable 80s vintage looks of two-tone Royal Oaks have attracted today's collectors to rare perpetual calendar versions such as the present watch with examples becoming ever harder to obtain.
