Lot Essay
This distinct tallboy belongs to a recognisable group of similar pieces which probably were not made in London but rather further afield in a location that has so far not been identified. This tallboy and related examples all display large proportions, the upper sections have two or three small drawers to the top below projecting cornices with canted angles above pilasters terminating in fielded panelled sections and downswept supports, often inlaid with brass, above an arrangement of three or four graduated drawers. Some, such as this, also have atypical claw-and-ball feet. A closely related example from this group with claw feet was sold from the collection of the late Peter Ascroft, Sherford House, Bromyard, Herefordshire, at Christie's, London, 17 November 2016, lot 103 (£10,000 inc. premium); an almost identical example with claw-and-ball feet was sold at Sotheby's, London, 22 April 1994, lot 61 (£4,600); a related example was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 18 October 2001, lot 91 ($17,625 inc. premium); and a further related example with cabriole feet was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 26 April 2008, lot 142 ($22,500 inc. premium).
