The present gilt-bronze-mounted panels depicting the profile of a faun and a bacchante can be compared to two very similar gilt-bronze panels adorning a Boulle marquetry armoire that was acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford from the Albert sale (28-30 January 1861, lot 146) and is today housed in the Wallace Collection, London (loc. cit.). In his description of the armoire Peter Hughes mentions Bacchic heads on the central panels of the doors and again 'on the left door with a laughing male bacchant head in profile facing right hand, on the right door, with a laughing female bacchante head in profile facing left. The male head is entwined with ivy, the female with lilies' (op. cit., p. 810). The sides of the armoire are also adorned with gilt-bronze personifications of seasons that also relate to the figures in the central panels: on the left side Autumn (Bacchus) and on the right side Summer (Ceres).
