Lot Essay

A study for the picture Gallait presented at the Ghent Salon in 1832. Gallait, encouraged by his master Hennequin, exhibited a picture at the Salon and won the first prize. The picture was bought by the city of Ghent and is now in a ruined state in the Ghent museum.
Gallait was accused of receiving assistance from Hennequin to paint his Tribute Money, and to prove that his detractors were wrong Gallait painted in 1833, after his master's death, a smaller version, now in a private collection. This version can be seen in Gallait's portrait by his friend Charles Haghe painted later that year. Gallait in turn used the same composition in the background of a double portrait of his mother and sister.
Another drawing for the same composition is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tournai, Belgium.
The verso is for Gallait's picture, also now in the Tournai museum.
