Lot Essay

This subject matter is rare, although it is occasionally found on large vases and dishes from the Kangxi period. The size and form of this jar is also rare; see an example with different subject and a lion finial, from the Peter Ralli Collection, illustrated by E. Gorer and J.F. Blacker in Chinese Porcelain and Hardstones, London, 1911, vol. I, plate 106. For another example with similar subject but of later date, see Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, sale 2310, lot 1460.
