Charles Dickens, 1836-1837
DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). “The Tuggses at Ramsgate” and “A Little Talk about Spring and the Sweeps,” in: The Library of Fiction or Family Story-Teller; consisting of Original Tales, Essays, and Sketches of Character. London: Chapman & Hall, 1836-1837.

A very early published appearance of Dickens—two stories written as “Boz.” The two short pieces by Dickens in this monthly periodical were later included in Sketches by Boz, the latter under the title “The First of May.” "The Tuggses at Ramsgate" has two illustrations by the first illustrator of Pickwick Papers, R. Seymour, and "A Little Talk about Spring and Sweeps" includes one plate by Seymour's short-term successor R.W. Buss. Eckel 137-139; Gimbel E121-2.

Two volumes, octavo. Half-titles. Relevant works on pp. 113-119 and pp. 137-139 of volume 1. 28 plates by Hablot K. Browne (“Phiz”), R. Seymour, R.W. Buss, and others (a few spots on select plates). Dark green blind-stamped cloth, title gilt on spine (rebacked preserving original spine panel). Provenance: Christie’s East, 22 May 1996, lot 124.
