Lot Essay

The signature cartouche reads, amal-e (the work of) Makhmalbaf.

The weaver, Makhmalbaf had established a successful carpet weaving workshop in Meshed towards the end of the great carpet revival in Iran in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although he was perhaps not as well known as his contemporaries, Amoghli or Saber. All three of these master weavers however were associated with producing carpets of the very finest quality using superior quality wool, dense and richly saturated palettes, and intricate and complex designs that were executed with a high knot density. Held in high esteem by the Pahlavi shahs and royalty, including Reza Shah, they were used for the decoration of the grandest of houses and palaces.
