Lot Essay

The Patek Philippe Nautilus is perhaps the most desired model of all the company’s production wristwatches, indeed it is one of the ultimate luxury status symbols in the world.
Christie’s is delighted to present this full set Platinum Nautilus 40th Anniversary reference 5711⁄1P with baguette diamond indexes. Made in a limited series of only 700 pieces and hardly ever seen at auction, this watch represents a remarkable opportunity for the determined collector to possess a wristwatch that is already part of Patek Philippe’s mythology.
With incredible solid platinum case and bracelet, this special 40th Anniversary Nautilus was launched in September 2016 along with the less limited oversized white gold Nautilus chronograph reference 5976⁄1G. The blue sunburst dial is adorned with perfectly matched baguette diamonds for the hour indexes with a total weight of 0.34 carats and is furthermore stamped with the 40th Anniversary inscription “40 - 1976-2016”. For the 40th anniversary Nautilus, Patek Philippe revived the famous and much appreciated cork presentation box in homage to the first ever stainless steel Nautilus, reference 3700⁄1.
The Nautilus is possibly the most recognizable wristwatch made by Patek Philippe. Designed by Gérald Genta and inspired by the shape of a ship's portholes, it was available as of 1976. With its generous proportions, unusual case design striking the perfect balance between sporting, elegant and understated, and the very robust construction, the first foray of Patek Philippe into the world of sports watches quickly became a worldwide commercial success, and marked the beginning of the Nautilus legend.
