Lot Essay

Among the limited corpus of Igodo crests linked to the Agbo cult honouring the sea goddess Olókun and the water spirits, this piece remains the most successful example still in private hands.

For a similar one, see Christie’s, London, July 24, 1979, lot 188, or the one preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. no. 1977.465, from the former Bryce Holcombe collection (1941-1983).
