MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY, Felix (1809-1847)
Autograph letter signed ('Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy') to [Carl Friedrich] Kistner, Leipzig, 15 [actually 14] July 1843.
In German. One page, 227 x 142mm, integral blank. Provenance: Heritage Auctions, New York, 9 April 2015, lot 49179; with J. & J. Lubrano.

On the proposed publication of Die erste Walpurgisnacht. 'The fee I have decided on for the first Walpurgis night is 100 Frederic d'or ... I beg you to tell me frankly if such a big and therefore expensive work by me is not convenient for you just now ... If you do not want the piece now, I will give you a smaller, shorter one as soon as possible'.

Mendelssohn had written the first version of Die erste Walpurgisnacht in 1831, setting a text by Goethe (whom Mendelssohn knew personally): it was first performed in Berlin on 10 January 1833, after Goethe's death. Mendelssohn worked on a second version in 1842-3 before its publication as his op. 60: this second version was premiered at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 2 February 1843 before an audience including Robert Schumann and Hector Berlioz. Sämtliche Briefe 4027.
