One of the greatest French flower books. The highly decorative bouquets and sprays of flowers are ornamental rather than scientific: 'The book was compiled to assist designers of china, toiles and chintzes and is not primarily botanical in intention. The most striking plates show several different flowers grouped together in a bouquet; but although the arrangements may appear artificial, and the flowers doubtfully matched as to season, the drawing is accurate and the observation exact' (Great Flower Books [1990] p.36). Contemporary with Redouté's work, Prevost's is also one of the earliest stipple-engraved and colour-printed books. The coarse stipple, though technically inferior to Redouté's, creates greater contrast and depth in the magnificent and luxurious groupings of flowers and fruit. The work was published in 12 cahiers of 4 plates each and in two issues: coloured or plain. Dunthorne 229; Great Flower Books (1990) p.36 and p.127; Nissen BBI 1568; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8319.
Large folio (510 x 340mm). Half-title, 48 stipple-engraved plates, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Louis Charles Ruotte with one by Chapponnier after drawings by Prevost (some spotting, mostly to text, occasional slight paper discolouration and faint spotting to a few plates, occasional loss or partial loss of engraved numerals). Early 19th-century French green half morocco gilt, top edge gilt (expertly rebacked preserving original spine, the whole furbished). Provenance: L.D.
