Lot Essay
Launched in 1959, the Tudor Submariner Reference 7928 was in production for a relatively long period of 10 years. The dive watch was an upgrade and the successor reference of the original Tudor Submariner 7924. Reference 7928, such as the present lot, grew in size from 37mm to 39mm which allowed for a more substantial presence on the wrist and easier legibility. The timepiece was also the first Tudor watch to have crown guards, adding to its ruggedness and practicality. The new addition was in response to the French Navy who would constantly knock the unprotected “Big Crown” of the predecessor in underwater environments, compromising the watertight seal.
The present lot is an earlier example of Reference 7928 and features beautiful gilt font. The dial has also developed a tropical patina. Powering the timepiece is Tudor automatic Caliber 390, a 17 jewel movement developed by Rolex. The lume is matching on the watch, and the seconds hand is a large, wonderful “lollipop” hand. The present lot is a wonderful opportunity to own an early, rugged, dive watch from a storied brand.
