Lot Essay

With a slot in his coat and and internal channel with wire fittings running from his left hand to the base, this figure was fitted with a contraption possibly for the storage of coins. For a related example of a peddler with similar gesture see Robert Bishop, American Folk Sculpture (New York, 1985), p. 31, no. 34.
