This unpublished drawing does not seem to be preparatory to a painting, but the position of the horse, the presence of dogs in the foreground, and the fluted columns of the building in the background reminds one of the atmosphere of the main painting of the History of Don Quixote, painted by Natoire around 1734-1735 and now at the Compiègne (inv. 38.764; see S. Caviglia-Brunel, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), Paris, 2012, no. P.60, ill.).

Lot Essay

Inédit dans l’œuvre graphique de Natoire, cette entrée triomphale d’un général à cheval sur papier bleu ne semble pas préparatoire à un tableau. En revanche, la position du cheval, la présence typique des chiens au premier plan et les colonnes cannelées du bâtiment à l’arrière-plan évoquent l’atmosphère du tableau principal de l’Histoire de Don Quichotte peint vers 1734-1735 et conservé aux musées et domaine nationaux du château de Compiègne (inv. 38.764 ; S. Caviglia-Brunel, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), Paris, 2012, n° P.60).
