A HIGH-WAISTED HUANGHUALI SIDE TABLE WITH ‘GIANT’S ARM’ BRACES
17TH CENTURY
The single-panel top is set within wide rectangular frame above a narrow waist, with ‘S’ shaped ‘giant’s arm’ braces extending from the inside of each leg to the underside of the table, terminating at the transverse stretcher, all supported on legs of square section terminating in hoof feet.

Lot Essay

The presence of ‘giant arm’s braces’ substitute the need for the more commonly seen humpback stretchers. Compare to a similar table formerly in the Grace Wu’s collection, illustrated in Sublime and Divine, Chinese Ming Furniture, Hong Kong, 2014, pp.88-91, later sold at Guardian Beijing, 17 May 2014, lot 4413.
