Lot Essay

Very rare and of wonderful appearance, this almost monochrome steel centre seconds reference 2457A HP (Heures Penchées) is further elevated by the silvered dial with Extract-confimed raised Breguet numerals. According to the latest research, this watch is one of only around six examples of reference 2457 in stainless steel known publicly.

Steel cased Patek Philippe vintage wristwatches are unquestionably the most sought after of all case metals. Made in far fewer numbers than their precious metal equivalents. This charming and overall very well preserved example has a case that retains strong proportions and as expected shows light wear form normal use over the past 73 years. The dial has been lightly cleaned at some time in the past and has highly attractive ‘sunray’ brushing. The engraved hard enamelled signature and outer minutes and seconds scale remain intact and beautifully raised.

A little known yet classic mid-century vintage Patek Philippe, reference 2457 was launched in 1949 to replace the famous ref. 96 and it remained in production until 1958. The new model retained the same ‘Calatrava’ case shape and proportions as its predecessor. The dials were made by Stern Frères and the cases by Antoine Gerlach, maker’s mark of number 4 in a key, one of the best casemakers of the period.

A rare and seldom seen reference of which only around half a dozen exist in steel, this Breguet numeral example is a wearable and great looking watch for any collector of vintage Patek Philippe.
