Lot Essay

A Lane Near Chester showcases Grimshaw’s interest in the varying effects of moon light in night scenes. This is evidenced in the sensitive inclusion of luminous puddles, complete with reflections and silhouettes of trees. The precise detailing within Grimshaw’s landscapes recalls the Pre-Raphaelites mantra of ‘Truth to Nature,’ so coined by John Ruskin. In keeping with Grimshaw’s other works from this series, the scene is populated by one, solitary figure, a housemaid dressed in her cap and apron returning home.
