L'atelier Embriachi, dont le nom est associé à une famille italienne de sculpteurs, fut fondé à Florence puis déplacé à Venise dans les années 1430. Spécialisé dans la fabrication de Certosina (marqueterie de bois, os et corne), l'atelier Embriachi est réputé non seulement au Nord de l'Italie mais aussi en Bourgogne où la famille Embriachi répond à de nombreuses commandes, notamment pour Philippe le Hardi, duc de Bourgogne. Les coffrets tel celui présenté ici furent produits en nombre important jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIème siècle, comme présents de mariage destinés à contenir bijoux et documents.
The Embriachi workshop, whose name is associated with an Italian family of sculptors, was founded in Florence and then moved to Venice in the 1430's. Specialised in the production of Certosina (woods, bone and horn marquetry), the Embriachi workshop was also renowned in Burgundy where the Embriachi family fulfilled numerous commissions, including those of Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy. Boxes such as the one presented here were produced in large numbers until the end of the 18th century, as wedding presents intended to contain jewellery and documents.
