The present painting, which is likely a fragment, can be compared with the Madonna of the Immaculate Conception in the Museo di Capodimonte (Naples; on loan from the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista delle Monache, Naples, see inv. no. 46). Fully attributed to Bernardo Cavallino (1616-1656) by Frederico Zeri (1921-1998) (inv. no. 20922), Ann Percy, in the catalogue of the 1984-1985 exhibition dedicated to the artist, considers the Naples painting instead to be a copy after, or an imitation of, the painter's work (A. Percy et al., Bernardo Cavallino of Naples, [exh. cat.], Cleveland, 1984, p.102).

Lot Essay

Notre tableau, dont la composition invite à penser qu'il s'agit d'un fragment, peut être rapproché de la Vierge de l'Immaculée Conception conservée au Museo di Capodimonte (Naples, voir no. inv. 46). Pleinement attribuée à Bernardo Cavallino (1616-1656) par Frederico Zeri (1921-1998), Ann Percy considère le tableaux napolitain plutôt comme une copie d'après, ou une imitation de l'œuvre du peintre (A. Percy et al., Bernardo Cavallino of Naples, [cat. exp], Cleveland, 1984, p. 102).
