Lot Essay

Launched in 2018 at Baselworld, the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight was wildly successful and instantly favored among collectors due to its versatile proportions at 39mm, thin profile, and wonderful vintage aesthetic featuring gilt-style typography and rose gold accents. Throughout its continuous production over the past five years, fans, collectors, and admirers of Tudor have enjoyed the new iterations and especially, the limited edition collaboration pieces of the Black Bay line.

Christie’s New York offers an exceedingly rare Black Bay Fifty-Eight “Pirate” Edition, the first known example to be publicly offered. The present lot is a very special collaboration between an informal, yet passionate group of watch collectors who all worked at Apple, and Tudor. Limited to only 82 examples, the timepiece features an Apple “pirate emoji,” which pays homage to Steve Jobs who was famously quoted for saying “It’s more fun to be a pirate than to join the Navy.” The pirate emoji was tastefully chosen by the group to subtly pay homage to the late Apple cofounder, rather than the iconic and bold Apple logo.

The “Pirate” emblem is located on the lower half of the dial, and further factory customization can be found on the caseback with a matching pirate emblem and limited edition number reading “27/82.” The present lot is an incredibly rare and playful timepiece to add to any collection and comes full set in unworn condition.
