Launched in 1954, the Rolex GMT-Master was designed to accompany the wrists of pilots to help track multiple zones as they navigated across the sky. The watch featured a 24-hour hand and bidirectional 24-hour bezel which could be rotated to indicate a second time zone. Iconic to the timepiece is its red and blue bezel that distinguishes daytime and nighttime and later led to its adored collector nickname, the “Pepsi.”
The present lot, reference 16750 is a later “Pepsi” GMT-Master dating to 1982. The watch is considered a transitional model and is highly sought after due to its matte black dial. Further, the dial and hands have developed an even, matching patina. The watch has a friction bezel and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Powering this timepiece is Rolex caliber 3075 which features a quickset date. Although this watch was produced nearly 30 years after the inaugural GMT-Master, its DNA lineage remains evident, making this GMT-Master a timeless, desirable vintage Rolex timepiece.
