The “Silver Snoopy Award” is a prestigious accolade within the NASA community. First presented in 1968, this award was part of the Manned Flight Awareness program whereby NASA astronauts selected companies and civilians who contributed to space travel. Omega was awarded the Silver Snoopy Award in 1970, when the Speedmaster wristwatch successfully helped time the launch back to earth during the Apollo 13 Crisis following an oxygen tank explosion that jeopardized the mission. Today, the “Silver Snoopy Award” continues to hold the same importance some forty years since its inception.
The present watch, the “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary, is a special edition chronograph timepiece celebrating the Snoopy lineage in Omega’s collection. It is the third watch in the series with the first Snoopy-related Speedmaster being released in 2003.
The present lot, the 2020 edition retains the Speedmaster Professional model with its case shape, reminiscent of the late 1960s model ST105.012. NASA’s favorite beagle adorns the solid silver dial in the seconds register while through the sapphire caseback, one sees a whimsical mechanical animation. The two-sided wristwatch’s caseback features a spinning globe which is ingeniously synchronized with the seconds wheel, and upon activation of the chronograph, snoopy can be seen riding on a rocket ship. Stopping and resetting the chronograph allows him to quickly zip by the dark side of the moon. With great demand from collectors, the present lot is a must-have Speedmaster and would be an excellent cornerstone to a watch collection.
